A truck tyre consists of several elements, and the size can vary between trucks. It may take a moment to determine which size your truck requires. The size includes three elements: the width, height, and diameter (in inches). Combined, these form the tyre size — for example: 315/70R22.5. The “315” stands for the tyre’s width, “70” for the height, and “22.5” for the rim size in inches.
Behind the tyre size, you’ll often find the load or speed index. These indicate the maximum weight the tyre can carry and the maximum speed it can safely drive at. You can also find these codes on the side of the tyre. For example: 315/70R22.5 156/150L. The bold part refers to the load and speed index. The numbers indicate the maximum load, and the letter refers to the speed rating. In this case, the tyre supports up to 4,000 kg and a top speed of 120 km/h.
Tyre pressure is essential for optimal performance. Tyres that are over- or under-inflated can be dangerous. That’s why manufacturers provide guidelines for proper pressure. Following them offers several benefits:
Regularly checking your tyre pressure helps prevent underinflation. Ideally, check once a month or before long trips and heavy loads. Always measure when tyres are cold, as warm tyres can show artificially high pressure.
On average, a truck tyre lasts between 100,000 and 200,000 km. However, this depends on several factors — some of which the driver can influence, such as loading, speed, and tyre pressure. Weather, road conditions, and maintenance also play a role. Regularly checking the tyre pressure helps reduce wear. Besides usage, the age of the tyre also matters. Once tyres are several years old, they should be inspected at least once a year. It is not recommended to use tyres older than 10 years on steer axles — though they may still be used on trailer axles. Tyres can also be damaged during use, and in some cases, this damage can be repaired. Repairs should always be carried out by trained and qualified professionals.
The tyre size is printed on the sidewall of the truck tyre. This sidewall shows a sequence of letters and numbers that indicates the tyre specifications.
New tyres last longer and deliver optimal performance. Used tyres are more affordable and often a smart choice if you drive fewer kilometres or need a temporary solution.
Truck tyres should be replaced once the tread depth reaches the legal minimum of 1.6 mm. Regardless of tread depth, tyres should also be replaced every 5 to 7 years due to rubber ageing.
Delivery times depend on the number of tyres and the destination. Within the Netherlands, delivery can take as little as 1–2 working days.
