Is a parking cooler good for the environment?

It’s no secret that diesel-powered trucks have an environmental impact. Manufacturers are constantly working to reduce emissions from engines ranging between 7 and 16 liters. And they are making great progress with the latest Euro 6 vehicles. However, even those trucks still emit CO2 and nitrogen oxides. Unfortunately, idling trucks are still a common sight in parking areas during the summer months, as drivers often have to keep the engine running to maintain a comfortable temperature in the cabin during rest periods.

With a parking cooler, the driver can rest in a pleasantly cooled cabin without having to keep the engine running. A Euro 5 Volvo FH produces 1.2 grams of CO2 per liter of diesel. When idling, the engine consumes about 1.5 liters per hour, and a typical rest period lasts around 8 hours. That means 14.4 grams of CO2 are unnecessarily emitted in just one night. Over the course of a year (5 months, 22 days per month), that adds up to 1.58 kg of CO2.

What happens to the battery if you use the parking cooler for a long time without recharging?

The operating time of a parking cooler strongly depends on the age of your battery. Normally, you can use a parking cooler for about 6–8 consecutive hours. The VIESA parking cooler is always equipped with a low-voltage protection system, which ensures that you can still start your vehicle afterwards.

How can I install the parking cooler on my cabin?

Mounting kits, which can be selected when ordering, ensure that you can install the parking cooler on your specific truck make and model. You can either install it yourself or have it done by a professional installer. A mechanic can install the parking cooler in a maximum of 3 hours.

Do I need to modify my cabin to install a parking cooler?

Installing a parking cooler does not require any modifications to your cabin. Thanks to the mounting kit that you can select when ordering, the parking coolers fit perfectly onto the roof hatch. However, if your truck is equipped with spoilers, beacons, or air horns, these may need to be relocated.

Is the weight of the parking cooler important when installing it on my cabin?

The weight that your cabin and roof can support varies per model. The load capacity of your roof is an important factor when installing a parking cooler on your cabin. In general, parking coolers are very lightweight. For example, the VIESA Kompressor III weighs only 14 kilograms. Made from polypropylene, this parking cooler is the lightest and most compact model on the market.

Does a parking cooler save fuel costs?

In addition to the environmental aspect, it is of course also important to consider the cost and potential savings of a parking cooler.

The annual savings are significant, as it prevents unnecessary diesel consumption. As mentioned earlier, an idling truck consumes about 1.5 liters of diesel per hour. With a fuel price of €1.40 per liter, a parking cooler can save you approximately €1,848 per truck per year.*

How quickly does a parking cooler pay for itself?

By using a parking cooler, the truck’s engine doesn’t need to idle at night. This results in significant fuel savings. Given the high fuel prices in recent times, a parking cooler pays for itself very quickly. Fill in the calculator below and calculate your payback period!
