Why do you need a truck parking cooler?

A driver works long days, so it is important to get proper rest in between. Research has shown that the ideal sleeping temperature is 18 degrees Celsius. A temperature that is too high prevents optimal sleep and results in waking up less rested.

For drivers who need to take their rest breaks in their truck, both at night and during the day, it is essential to sleep well and wake up refreshed. This makes them fitter and more focused, which increases road safety. In addition, a parking air conditioner improves comfort in the truck and reduces fuel costs, making it a very attractive investment.

Is a parking cooler mandatory?

In the Netherlands, since 2021 it has been mandatory for all newly sold trucks to be equipped with a parking air conditioner. This is laid down in the collective labour agreement of Transport and Logistics Netherlands (TLN). According to this agreement, the driver must be able to stay in a comfortable temperature, even when the engine is off.

For trucks from before 2021, it is not yet mandatory to have a parking air conditioner. However, it is expected that in the medium term a requirement will also be introduced for older trucks.

What is the purpose of a truck parking cooler?

It is important to note that a parking cooler is a supplement to a truck’s standard air conditioning system. To use it effectively, the cabin should first be brought to the desired temperature. For example, if you want to sleep at 21°C, make sure the cabin is already at that temperature before turning off the main air conditioning. Once the main system is off, you can switch on the parking cooler, which is designed to maintain the set temperature.

A parking cooler is not powerful enough to further cool down the cabin on its own. Its main function is to keep the temperature stable rather than lower it.

How do I install a truck parking cooler?

A parking air conditioner is relatively easy to install on a truck or camper. All roof-mounted units come with the necessary mounting and installation materials. These units can also be installed over the roof hatch of a truck. Even trucks with a sloped roof (such as a Volvo FH5) can be fitted with a roof air conditioner. The unit does need to be connected to the truck’s electrical system.

Many (truck) garages have the knowledge and tools to carry out this installation. In addition, we can also take care of the installation for you in our own workshop.

Is a parking coolers also suitable for campers?

Parking air conditioners can also be installed on campers. These units are often mounted (just like on trucks) over the top roof window or roof hatch. Electrical connection is usually straightforward.
